We see the ads everywhere, on television, radio, and on the web for free websites for your business. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know the popular brands as you do popular breakfast cereals. From a marketing and branding perspective, these services have their game down. But I have a question for my independent business owner friends: can your business afford a free website?
“It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little” –John Ruskin
Here are a few things to consider before investing your time in a free website:
Easy to use?
Free website services are designed to be easy to use, drag-and-drop procedures. Like anything else, however, unless you’re operating with a modern teenage brain, there’s nothing about “easy to use” that’s easy to use. Even though I work in this field, I’m often frustrated learning new interfaces. So beware the unforeseen time investment in your free website.
The generic nature of free website services means there are few insights available for understanding and defining your website’s business case. Why is that important? At Now Age New Media, we’ve been working with independent businesses since 1998 to define and develop a home on the internet. The first part of that process is “define.” It’s in the consulting strategy sessions where we discern your goals, and infused with our insights, determine a direction for your website. There’s no chance you’ll find someone on the free service help line whose familiar with homeopathy, for instance.
The value of value
Imagine if in your field someone opened a competing clinic or shop that offered its goods or services for free. I’m certain you’ll have no shortage of language to describe what you rightly see as offensive to your business. To quote the 19th Century, renown British art critic John Ruskin, “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little.” It’s a question of value, and determining the value of a product of service involves balancing cost and outcome. You can bet your bottom dollar that the time you invest in a free website for your business will be valuable time down the drain.
